Welcome to PolyOz

This site is a resource for polyamorous Australians, their friends, relatives and supporters, and anyone who is curious to find out more about polyamory.

Polyamory has been defined as the philosophy and practice of loving more than one person at a time with honesty and integrity. The term Polyamory was coined in the late 80's by a pagan Priestess, Morning Glory Zell, and defines a range of different lifestyle alternatives. In most cases, but not all, this involves some sexual or at least intensely intimate sensual behavior. - reference:- ejhs.org

Polyamorous people come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some belong to an organised religion, and some don't. Some have children, and some don't. Some are currently looking for new relationships, and some aren't. We are of all ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, occupations, and political persuasions.

The one and only thing that all polyamorous people have in common is this:-
We believe it is possible to have more than one romantic relationship at a time, ethically and constructively.

This is a place where everyone who shares that belief, or who is interested in finding out more about it, can find information, stories, resources, and mutual support.

If you are aware of any other Australian poly website, email list, social group, or other resource which is not mentioned here, please email us the details, so we can update the site and continue to be a comprehensive reference point for Australian polyamory.

The developers of this site also encourage members to submit news, photos, details of upcoming events or anything of interest to Poly folk and to enter into broader discussions of Polyamory in general. We invite members to tell their story or share their experiences to further the education and awareness of our lifestyle within the general community and to help in creating a unique interactive Poly Community on the web, and as previously mentioned - this is a community site and therefore we want the views of the Poly Community reflected in the site content.

Whilst this site is hosted by an incorporated association, it is not the domain of any particular group or organisation.
It belongs to you, the people who visit.

- Make the most of it!

Polygamy or Polyamory ?

Polygamy and polyamory are often confused. Some people think of polygamy as technically a subset of polyamory - others disagree and say that the (very recent) term "polyamory" is different in spirit. Men and women pursuing either polygamy or the wider polyamory report both happy and difficult experiences. In any case, you may find the following comparative description of polyamory and polygamy helpful.

It is important to note that in no culture is polygamy (or polyamory) the majority practice. It is usually a tiny minority.

Polyamory
Polygamy

Polyamory can involve relationship between people of any gender (including transgender) and any sexual orientation. Sexual connections may or may not occur between any members of a Polyamorous grouping, as the group decides.

There seems to be no grouping in polyamory which is dominant - relationship groupings are like snowflakes, with no two alike.

The commonest polygamous grouping is the relationship between one straight man and two or more straight women. This is known as Polygyny. Although Polyandry (one woman with several men) does occur, it is rare. Most commonly in polygamy, sexual relationships are expressed only between the man and each woman individually.

Polyamory involves people of any or no religious/spitirual conviction, although it seems rare or non-existent amongst religious fundamentalists.

In the west, polygamy is mainly practiced by religious sects such as (a splinter group of) the Mormons. In the rest of the world, polygamy occurs most commonly in a variety of Muslim and other (mainly Asian) cultures.
Polyamory tends towards a feminist approach, in that most polyamorists regards men and women as being equal in all respects with regard to relationship rights and requirements.
Polygamy (in its commonest form of polygyny) tends towards a patriarchal approach, seeing the man as protector of the women. There are some Western polygamous relationships which report a qualified kind of feminism because each woman has the advantage of a shared, communal family work load.

PolyOz is Moving!

The PolyOz site will shortly be moving location and undergoing a much needed upgrade and overhaul of site features and functions.

move.jpg

The site will undergo a small name change, to more emaphasise it's functions within the Australian Poly Community.

The Primary purpose of the site will be to provide Public Education about our lifestyle, showcase real Poly stories from real Poly people, without the the slant sometimes seen in the mainstream media. We will also provide personal blogs for the Poly Community, a calendar of upcoming events throughought the country and reports on those events as well as the ever popular forums. We will also include a "guide" to Poly support groups throughout Australia so as you can link in with a group in your area.

In short the site aims to network the site visitor with Polyamory Resources that are available throughout the Country and to keep up to date with what is happening within the Poly Community.

The new site will be polyoz.net.au

But - we need your help!

To make the new site more interactive and create an unique online experience within the Poly Community, we are looking for your feedback on what site features you would like to see included on the new site.

Does the site need personal ads, or perhaps lean more towards a social format where we can have user profiles that are a little more detailed that also act as a "contact" section with users being able to search for profiles that are similar to their own and then send a wink or message to members that choose to be able make contacts?

Perhaps you have your own ideas on layout, site navigation or features that can be included - any ideas at all will be considered and Open for discussion - the primary concern at this stage is to make polyoz.net.au a Community Site and that means that we have to provide what the community wants and will use - because the more people using the site makes the site more interesting and a better browsing experience for all concerned.

Please feel free to leave your comments, by clicking the comments link below, on what you would like to see included from this site or something new that we haven't had before. Also - pop on over to the templates gallery and look through the selection of site templates and vote or leave your comments on the designs we have there for the new look of the site.

Hopefully with your help we can get some meaningful discussion going and develop a site that is truly what the community wants......

Brothers share wife to secure family land

Originally Published at CNN - http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/10/24/polygamy.investigation/index.html

HIMACHAL PRADESH, India (CNN) -- Amar and Kundan Singh Pundir are brothers. Younger brother Amar breaks rocks in a mine for a living. Kundan farms their small piece of inherited land. They live in a beautiful but remote hillside village in the clouds of Himachal Pradesh, India.

Both aged in their forties, the two brothers have lived together nearly their whole lives. They are poor and share just about everything: Their home, their work and a wife.

"See we have a tradition from the beginning to have a family of five to 10 people. Two brothers and one wife." Kundan says.

They practice what is known as fraternal Polyandry -- where the brothers of one family marry the same woman. Why? Tradition and economics.

Life is hard here. The village is precariously perched on the side of a very steep hill about 6,000ft up. Most of the villagers survive off tiny plots of cropland.

In this difficult terrain there isn't enough land to go around. So, instead of finding separate wives and splitting up their inherited property, the brothers marry the same woman and keep their land together.

Wife Indira Devi says life with two husbands isn't easy.

"We fight a lot."

But like any married couple they fight mostly over mundane stuff, except there are three spouses instead of two.

"Usually it's about chores, why didn't you do this? Why didn't you do that?" she says.  One thing they agreed on was the need to have children; They have three. So how does a married trio deal with Sex?

"We make shifts, change shifts and sleep on alternate days. We have to make shifts otherwise it won't work," Kundan says.

"To run our families we have to do this, overcome the hurdles as well and then we have to control our hearts from feeling too much," Amar adds.
